Jill Scott explains a recent incident where she was called a nigger and how she handled it:
“I was waiting outside for the valet to bring the car round, and these … I say kids, but they must have been 25, looking wealthy, five-o’clock-in-the-morning wasted. And this guy’s saying, ‘Step back nigger, step back nigger.’ He’s saying it like it’s a song, but there’s nobody out there but me. I was taken aback, and I said, ‘Excuse me?’
And he said, ‘Shut your mouth and don’t say a word when a white man is talking.’
“I’m not kidding. I started laughing, and I followed him and his cohorts through the parking lot laughing hysterically, and they became more and more uncomfortable. It was one of the best moments of outrageous laughter I’ve had. To think for one moment I could possibly fit into that box … I am so far from that word that it is funny. They looked so uncomfortable; I wanted to emasculate him, to make sure he was getting no nookie that night. The girls sobered up and were looking scared. It was something else - the first time in my life I’ve been called that. Wow. But I enjoyed it. You must fight back; it’s imperative. I like the fight in me now.”

What I find most amusing is that there are people coming to this country illegally, every single day and those that still harbor racism find that their energy is best used in attacks on people that have been loyal to this country for over 400 years. I agree we need to do something to get the world’s attention and what would be more powerful than to stop all the crime that is putting our young black men in jail or to stop infecting each other with HIV, or to get more degrees. Yes these things take longer to achieve but the effects of them will last a lot longer than killing some white folks are doing something drastic. I was watching something on BET over the weekend and did you know that 1 in 20 black people in DC are infected in HIV? and in some areas 1 in 10. Did you know that those areas are blocks away from the white house and that there has been on call for national emergency? Why? b/c it’s black folks killing black folks. I’m sorry that was your experience but I too grew up around predominantly whites, had all white friends, some white boyfriends etc up untill I was 14 and moved to L.A. (I’m from San Jose) and I was NEVER called a nigger until I started hanging around black people who tried their BEST to make me feel like I wasn’t black enough. I have even dated white kids who’s parents didn’t think they liked black people until they met me and felt comfortable enought to tell me so. They were going off of what the media showed them about us and had never interacted with to many of us (this is back in 1989-1994).
The fact that I dated white boys that were strong enough to make up their own minds and not go by the ignorance they were taught shows growth!!! There ARE white people that are raised to be racist and grow up and marry outside of their race and live very happily.
I KNOW RACISM EXISTS. I will never deny that and I will alwayz be aware of that eventhough at my level, it is corporate racism, it still exists. But I do have to admit, I have had more doors shut because I am a young woman more than for the color of my skin.

One day I was in my car headed to the bank and this guy yelled out NIGGER. I’ve always experienced racism because I’ve always been around white people due to school, where I live, and work. But its always hidden racism. There I was minding my business driving my car he was passing in his truck and yells out Nigger. (This isn’t the south either its PA) Amazingly the word just didn’t even affect me at all because I moreso appreciate knowing how you REALLY feel about me. I hate how YT hides behid racism in school ad the corporate world. They get you by not giving you the job, promotion, talking down to you, talking behind your back, the list goes on and on. His words had no power over me at all it was just a confirmation of their ignorance and need to hurt people. Here I was, I never even seen this asshole in my life didn’t even have to do anything to him. They are just full of hate.
And to the person who says she gets it more from black people and whites like you. What you get from black people isn’t racism! You may get jealousy which is common in ANY race. Of course greed and jealousy will bring out the worst in some but racism is a whole other level where they don’t even have respect for you as a human being. And PUHLEASE if you think its so great that YT told you after they got to know you how they used to think a certain way until they met you, I just feel really sorry for you when reality hits. Why do you need to be an EXAMPLE to them that not all blacks are so bad. I’ve heard racism come from the mouth of blacks, asians, whites and hispanics alike. Different cultures are what makes our planet beautiful but realize that each person within that culture is an INDIVIDUAL and they responsible for their own actions. Hold the person accountable, not the entire race.
