Alicia Keys Wanted to Surprise Fans by Playing a Lez

The more I read, the more I got it. I was like, “Wow, there’s nothing people will expect from me less than this.” And that’s what I wanted when it came to the film. I don’t want to be the singing, piano-playing “girl role.” I want to be something that’s not who I am.
A lot of people think she licks, we don’t see that lesbian role as surprising at all. She did her thang in the movie. Here is AK on the set of her new video in Harlem with the bunny and on the cover of the new issue of Ebony.

I’m going to guess it’s because Alicia does not appear to have a girly-girl demeanor and does not make a spectacle of her private sex life. Ergo, in some people’s minds, she must be hiding something. The real issue here is that America is really coming to grips with the sliding scale of homosexuality. It was once thought that gay was gay and you’d know it when you saw it but now with the POPularization of that culture it’s becoming quite clear that there is far more to it. Add in the complexities of religion and hate and you got a lot of people up in arms. The progressive nature of civilzation accepts it but the conservative component still sees it as taboo–despite it staring them in the face (see Dick Cheney’s daughter, black church choir director).
What celebrities do is bring a face to this issue. So depending on what side of the coin you fall on–it’d bother you to the point where you’d disavow all support of that individual or you’d go all in and support their work. That’s why it will continue to be such a hot topic with clebs.

A big debate on misinformation she did not play a lesbian in the movie,(by the way I agree Alicia and Common have great chemistry and a movie with them would be a great idea) and discussions like this one are why she wouldn’t come out if she were gay. No one has mentioned the fact that after only a few weeks on the charts she is #2 on R&B charts and #12 on the top 100 chart, the fact that she’ll be on Jay Leno Friday. Besides she is always hugged up with her producer, so I really don’t think homegirl is into the chicks like that. She is just private and not trying to be all in the headlines, like some celebrities, based on who she is sleeping with she is in the headlines because of her music and movies.

Alicia didn’t play a lesbian in the movie. Taraji Henson, who played her partner in the film, was pretty much the lesbian. Taraji’s character would always try to push up on Alicia’s character, but Alicia’s character made it clear that she wasn’t having it.
So–while I wouldn’t advise anybody to see the movie because it wasn’t good–if you are going to make a claim about something, you might want to know what you’re talking about first.
As for Alicia being a lesbian in real life, who knows? I mean, I get a sense that she is because there’s just something about her that is just so masculine.
But, at the same time, if she’s insistent on saying that she’s not gay, then people should respect that and leave it alone.

Trust, folks, she is gayer than a picnic at Elton John’s house… it’s a not-very-well-kept secret in NYC. She used to be sorta public with it– she’d go out to Lotus and Marquee (two big, very hot, and very exclusive old nightclubs in NYC) and take her girlfriend with her.
