Quote of the Day: Rachel Smith

Posted by Bossip Staff

Miss USA Rachel Smith drops some gems on future career plans and how she celebrated when she won the Miss USA title:

I always wanted to be a reporter — maybe some TV. Who knows? Some serious news. I just don’t want to end up like Katie Couric. I want people to take me seriously.”

“I was wearing, like, a hot pink Rocawear sweatsuit and paraded around my room at the Waldorf, just dancing with my crown!”

This broad sounds dumb as hell. Bragging that you were dancing around your hotel room in a hot pink Rocawear sweatsuit and making statements like this will most likely qualify you as non-serious status. This is who is “representing” the ladies of our country, Katie Couric is the last person she needs to be taking jabs at. SMH.

  2. hmmmmm? C Anal+ TV?

  3. This girl is ridiculous. She can only dream about being as serious a newswoman as Katie Couric. I mean PLEASE, she’s a pageant girl. She better looked Penthouse’s number and stop fussin before her minutes are over.

  4. Not You

Why is she dissing Katie? Umm, know your broadcasting history, little girl. Katie Couric is the FIRST weekday solo female prime time news anchor on a major network. On your best day, you couldn’t carry Katie’s used hot pink panties.

    Kids today! No respect!

  5. loveyoulongtyme

Katie Couric is PAID!!! Not to mention, Katie was taken more seriously as a morning anchor women than many women in primetime news. Katie is reporting from Iraq as we speak! Homegirl needs to fall back. She’ll be lucky if she lands a gig as a co-host on extra, let alone as a journalist on katie’s level.

  6. mia_uno

Ditto to everyone! What the hell is she talkin about? She should be *ecstatic* to become a small fraction of what Katie Couric has become!!! She is a legend! this girl is a piece of a nobody!!! Makin out with Terrence Howard. and don’t nobody care about no damn, Miss USA!! this is NOT 1982!!!

  7. Butterfly

LOL @ at all the comments. Way to burn bridges before you even get started. But Rachel interned for Oprah, so maybe she thinks she has Oprah in her corner. Regardless, respect your elders.

  8. Huh?

She lost me with the Katie Couric comment. The CBS Evening News isn’t doing that great in the ratings, but Katie made history when she took over that role. This girl is confused.

  9. Astrid

She sounds lame. Bless her heart. That’s probably why she fell on her butt during the Miss Universe Pageant.

  10. 1 american

    COCAINE IS A HELLUVA DRUG!!!

  11. jd

Okay..so her comment on Katie Couric is stupid! She wishes she could be like Katie Couric! She must be smoking crack or something to even make that statement!

  12. SWEET MINTY JESUS BE AN EDUCATION / DIPLOMA / COMMON SENSE / AND THE KNOWLEDGE TO KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT FOR THIS DUMMY!

  13. crest

i have a big crush on this girl she grew up in my hometown but the first comment wasnt good. katies ratings stink but she is still katie couric. im sure oprah can help blow rachel up since rachel goes to africa with oprah and she rachel also talked about oprahs favorite book “the secret” helping her win the crown

  14. ohnoudient

Somebody tell this chile, Katie Couric is pulling down $20 million a year.

  15. ko

She doesn’t want to be like katie couric?!!! Well based on her above comments shes got nothing to worry about

  16. Smartie

Umm Little Miss Clueless, while you were dancing around in that hot pink Rocawear Katie was on tv making her 13 million a year. The last time you were on tv and anybody gave a shit about you was when you were on your ass, literally. Katie will be in the Broadcast Journalist Hall of Fame and you will be a future trivia question. I really hope you’re with Terrence Howard. You 2 fools deserve eachother.

  17. moxpoe1

?, Katie Couric is a good success story. She actually worked her way up.

  18. helltothanaw

Effin’ moron. My gawd, she’s so dense.

  19. Just a thought...

“This broad sounds dumb as hell”

Now I usually don’t like it when Bossip calls the sistas or brothers out their names, but I don’t know, it sounded funny as hell in my head while I was reading this, LOL!

  20. Nic

I don’t see anything wrong with what she said. What was she supposed to be wearing around her hotel room? And Katie Couric may be getting paid but she has had the lowest ratings of all the “Big Three” network news anchors since she started.
Rachel is probably saying she wants to be more like Soledad O’Brien(CNN).

  21. She graduated Magna cum laude from college & was an intern at Oprah, which is not easy.

I don’t see anything wrong with what she said. Also, when you just take quotes out, even Oprah can sound like she doesn’t have half the sense she was born with.

  22. Nic

Okay. I had to go find the original article where she make the quote…and I retract my support. I still like Rachel though, but…

    Miss USA Rachel Smith

I always wanted to be a reporter — maybe some TV. Who knows? Some serious news — but some modeling, too,” she said at the Women in Entertainment Empowerment Network event last week.

“I just don’t want to end up like Katie Couric. I want people to take me seriously.”

    Ouch!

(Couric’s rep later responded: “If she continues to offer such profound insight, she will not have to worry about anyone taking her seriously.”)

  23. richboy

Pagent girls are pretty dumb as a rule. I’ve met Shana Mokeler and my boy dated Tamiko Nash….both were cute, but two of teh DUMBEST chicks I’ve ever met. For real, its like part of what they look for in a winner.

  24. Reformed GammaRay

who still watches the pageants?.. I stopped when my bedtime was 11 pm.
Now that your crowned the Misses of the US of A takin time out of your busy roca wear prancin and dancin to news report is SUCH a great contribution.. ho sit…

  25. La. Finest

She look like a alcoholic. Katie Couric making money while she trying to establish fame off her Miss USA title. If Bossip didn’t say who she was she would be just another random chick.

  26. alexandria218

This is a very smart and inspiring young lady! Don’t be so quick to judge…Google her

  27. She has not right to be talking shit about Katie. To be real though, Katie makes a lot of money but she is NOT taken seriously.

  28. Dee

    she looks like ciara

  29. CinEffinRella

    Pancake Number 9.

  30. Shut up, Bossip. Obviously the girl was answering two different questions:

    1. What are your future career plans?
    2. What did you do to celebrate winning Miss USA?

You know ya’ll be dancing in the mirror for much less.

  31. Queenie

What an idiot!! Katie is very successful. I wish I had half of her career.

  32. dana

she looks like tatiana ali (ashley)

  33. Kizz My Azz

This is what happens to pagent girls when they have not been coached as to how they should handle questions from the media…Where was her assistant to pull the damn microphone away…and say “No Comment”…We are still trying to get this retard to realize that stupid azz answers like these are not allowed…Media please come back another time…

  34. Robert Trebes

First of all, it’s Kim Kardashian who’s with Terrence
Howard; she tossed out Rachel Smith’s name to cover her tracks. Rachel is not a party girl, and certainly not with a married man.
I don’t think her comments were intended as a slight, but were just some ill-chosen words. Then Miss Couric overreacted and turned a proverbial molehill into a mountain. So when you think about it what did she say that’s so outrageous?
The network of Edward R. Murrow and Charles Collingwood, the network that took on Joe McCarthy at his peak, caved to right-wing pressure and fired Dan Rather for daring to blow the whistle on our chickenhawk President’s war record and replaced him with with a lightweight cheesecake anchorwoman that can’t win the public’s respect. Couric has become a joke that’s dragged the CBS Evening News’ ratings to record lows. Rather has talked about the Evening News being “dumbed down and tarted up.” Rachel Smith is just starting her career, and she doesn’t want it to end that way; who would?
For the record, before she was Miss USA, she earned a journalism degree magna cum laude from a prestigious college and served an internship in the news department of a local TV station, so she’s entitled to her opinion on the subject. She’s already achieved far more than most young women her age (22), so based on her record there’s a good chance when she’s Couric’s age she’ll be taken more seriously than Couric is now.

  35. Pillar

Well, if she is an Oprah protege, Oprah needs to mentor her immediately. Help her get her foot out of her mouth and exercise the golden rule of journalists, no opinions… just the facts m’am.

Anyway, she has already taken her credibility down a notch by going from magna cum laude grad to vapid beauty queen. So, I already don’t take her seriously.

  36. Robert Trebes

Rachel has issued a statement saying that Katie Couric has always been one of her role models, so everybody can sleep easier now. Good Lord, why is everybody so quick to take offense? You’d think she had questioned her mother’s species or something. It was fairly obvious from the beginning that this whole dustup was a misunderstanding.

  37. Robert Trebes

On October 1, the New York Daily News retracted their story falsely accusing Rachel Smith of dissing Katie Couric, but not before it had done substantial damage to her reputation:

“In an interview credited to a freelance contributor on Monday, this column quoted Miss USA Rachel Smith “dissing” Katie Couric during a red carpet interview. The Miss Universe organization later complained that her comment was taken out of context. After reviewing the taped interview I agree that Miss Smith used the word “credibility” in a context that could have been misinterpreted by the journalist. A pageant rep tells us: “Rachel is a huge fan of Katie Couric and would love nothing more than to have a career such as hers.”"

In case you couldn’t make any sense of that gobbledegook, here is Miss Smith’s version of what she told the Daily News reporter, essentially confirmed by the News:

“I was stopped by many journalists, one which included a young woman from the New York Daily News. Her questions covered a wide spectrum of material, but I was eagerly willing to supply her with material for her piece. One of her questions was something along the lines of, “What would you like to do after Miss USA?” My answer to her was something like this, “I have aspirations of pursuing journalism after my reign as Miss USA. I would like to do a little more entertainment-oriented, lighter news, unlike the news Katie Couric does, because I would like to still have the opportunity to do modeling jobs and endorsement opportunities. My credibility would be at risk if I tried to do those things while delivering hard news.”
In no way, shape or form was my comment a “diss” to Katie Couric. To the contrary, I am actually a HUGE fan of Ms. Couric’s, and I would love nothing more than to replicate a successful journalism career like hers.”
