Quote of the Day

Posted by Bossip Staff

Bill Cosby’s daughter on being privileged:

“My own people used to say to me, ‘You speak like a white woman,’” said the youngest daughter of Bill and Camille Cosby at her chic new boutique, PB & Caviar, in Tribeca.

“What does that even mean, anyway? Everyone has their way of speaking and living their life. No one should be judging and assuming that because I’m black, I have to speak in that hip-hop way. That’s something I prefer not to do.”

“I always went to private schools - Bank Street elementary, Columbia Prep - so I was surrounded by people like me. Not so much African-American, but privileged. I don’t really have a connection to other people who didn’t have my lifestyle. But my dad is very into helping people from his own community in Philadelphia.”

Wow, she sounds awfully ’sheltered’. SMH at “I have to speak in that hip-hop way”. Mind you, this broad sells those little newborn stillettos at this store too.

  3. Did she speak with proper grammar or LIKE VALLEY?

  4. I'm Just Me- JOSHUA ALLEN WON SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE!! HE AND KANYE CAN SO GET IT!!!! STILL HOOVY AND BUCKY BABY's #1 STAN!!!!)

I mean I understand all of what she said. I grew up going to those elite schools in Manhattan…upper East Side at that, and I always got made fun of when I got back home to the BX…it is what it is. Why is she discussing this…she is not the only one.

    GOOD MORNING BOSSIP FOLK!!

Not everyone grows up “privileged” and not everyone grows up “ghetto.” Open your minds people.

No connection to others who didn’t have your lifestyle??? WOW. You would think her dad’s role in helping the black community would resonant to her…I soooo wouldn’t want to be you!!

  8. IJM….

    You are knida VALLEY :)

  9. MistaO

This ole, “Black people don’t like me because I speak white” argument is old, tired and worn out. As if saying this grants one some type of “pass”.

Now we all know there’s a marked difference between speaking proper english and speaking to SOUND white! And the latter is what most Black people who bring this up are refering to, not the fact that a Black person is speaking properly…

  10. Haviland

There’s nothing wrong with speaking proper English.

  11. finesseyoswagger! (do u...)

    @ Dr. Nikki

    lol

  12. its standard english and thats fine but it sounds condescending. being brought up with money is great but instead of not connecting, rich ppl need to connect with less fortunate so that there will be more people exposed to greater lifestyles. attitudes like this is what keeps our ppl in bad situations http://www.girlfriendchurch.com

  13. Soulwoman

What’s wrong with what she said? She didn’t grow up in an urban community. She grew up around different races where they spoke like she did, so she didn’t stand out like she did once she broke away from her environment. Black folk are famous for referring to proper speaking as talking “white”. When you say talking white, I think the Paris Hilton/Clueless type.

  14. Umm who is this and why is she getting air time? Black people kill me sometimes whether its the so called “uppity” ones or the so called “ignored” ones How and the hell do u speak hip hop? And who in the hell with times like they are has any spare time to critique the way someone else speaks? \

She doesn’t sound white! She just sounds like a big ol’ BITCH!

“I always went to private schools - Bank Street elementary, Columbia Prep - so I was surrounded by people like me. Not so much African-American, but privileged. I don’t really have a connection to other people who didn’t have my lifestyle. But my dad is very into helping people from his own community in Philadelphia.”

So what she is saying is that she is not into helping the poor because she does not feel a connection to those people! It’s because of this type of thinking that only 1% of people in this country have wealth. SMH

  19. MR FLORIDA = I'M STILL SLEEPY

    Good morning folks!

  20. finesseyoswagger! (do u...)

Only a small % of the U.S. population actually speaks STANDARD ENGLISH or even more of a rarity, the QUEENS ENGLISH. We’re a long way from England sis…FYI…as long as ur articulate…

  21. so much to say (always late to the game...oh well...

What did this statement have to do with her opening a boutique?

If talking white helps you to own your business, I would like to learn more about it.

Also since she was around so many “priveleged” folks, most of them believe in being thin. I guess she only picked up their speach patterns.

  22. bamaluvbamaluv

    She sounds like a retard…..

  23. SWEET CHEEKS((Makes the people say Yeeeaaaa))

she lookin like Monique to me…

Shit, I can be proper within the drop of dime when need be..

But she had an upbringing to be proper at “all times”.. I mean, the Cosby’s were also talking Very Proper.. Ooh Well..

  26. Janie

I agree that she sounds more unenlightened than “uppity.” It is ironic that her father has reached back to help others and she shows no interest in anyone outside her current social group. I feel sad for her because without her father’s work, she wouldn’t be standing there in her new shop, selling ridiculous clothes to people like herself. Is her father funding this little venture? So sad, so very sad.

  27. When you try so hard to separate yourself from something 9 times out of 10 you don’t manage too. She said speaking in “hip hop” is something that she prefers not to do. So….does that mean someone has suggested that she step her soulja boy slang up or what? Or does she secretly have a desire to be in the next kanye west video? Does she really think that she is the only “privileged” black person ?

  28. Princess Aoki Lee

I think it is quite obvious that Ms. Coby did not grow up in the hood. However there are thousands of black people who also did not grow up in the hood and do not speak in that hip hop way. Ms. Cosby sounds very classist and elitist to assume that “black people in whole” do not like her because of her diction, is akin to being a racist. Racist people judge all people by the color of the victims skin instead of their individual actions. I think that the black people who openly dislike the young Ms. Cosby dislike her on the basis of her ego, aka hyping herself up in her mind because she is the daughter of a famous/wealthy man.

The day that Ms. Cosby is reminded by a white person of her caliber, she will get the realization that to some Whites/Blacks/Ignorant Fools she is just a “negress in a benz”.

Instead of worrying about who dsnt like her, maybe she should figure how why she dsnt like herself enough to just “be”. SMDH at her ignorance….

  29. SWEET CHEEKS((Makes the people say Yeeeaaaa))

And no she didnt say “speak in that hip hop way”…

  30. serene

I know what she means. I use to get it all the time, but i ddidn’t live like she did though. When ever, i spoke proper, It was, “she talk white”. I hated dat shyt. Tehre is a time and place for everything, and i’m not gonna speak the same all the time. I talk diff wen i’m with my friends and when i’m at work n school.

I didn’t see anything wrong with what she said. It is what it is. And the argument isn’t old. Some people are just so use to one thing, that they dont’ realize you can’t be that way all the time.

  33. She may speak white, but she don’t look white and she will never be white, In white people eyes she is a black woman. Although their is nothing wrong with blacks speaking correct english. And going to private schools.

Just like Tiger, he can run but he will be reminded he is black if he get out of line.

  34. @MistaO & MIZZGAPEACH

I agree with you! who cares anyway what ole girl has to say, one would already figure, being Bill Cosby’s daugther that you “privileged & proper”, so who cares and whatever?!

  35. correction, Although THERE is nothing wrong with blacks speaking correct english.

  36. Morpheus

So this is how Bill wants black people to act, UNATTACHED….interesting.

  37. Vee

    Morning Y’all ! Happy monday.

@ teedy-exactly, she just sounds like a be-yatch. How she sounds is less of an issue than her attitude, which I’m sure is cocky and superior.

@ so much to say-how right you are: girlfriend is well-fed and well-read. Just the fact that she said ‘hip-hop talk’ makes me want to smack her. WTF is that???

I’m from Philly and I take offense to her comment: as if everyone in Philadelphia is struggling to speak and live day-to-day, without the help of her wonderful father. Please! I grew up in the inner-city. I went to public school and then spent several years in private school (I preferred the public school). I learned how to speak well because the people around me-at home were well-spoken. In addition, I read alot as a child and that contributed to the way I spoke/speak. Some kids accused me of speaking white too-it went in one ear and out of my ass. Because I know who and what I am and I can speak well and still respresent my blackness-proudly. Cosby’s daughter looks and sounds like she has some issues.

  38. Vinandi ( stanning for Khia since 2003!- Nasty Musik dropping 18 August 2008!)

    @ Soulwoman

I agree with you- there is nothing wrong with what she said! I am African and was prveleged enough to attend a private school, so i have a fucked up accent! no one can really place where am from and everyone comments that I dont sound African! which is bollocks cause I am 100% proud to be a Black African!

it is annoying becasue people think you’re being a snob or up your arse, when you are merely a product of political socialisation!

Nonetheless I dont know this chick other than she’s Bills kid, and if she sells those stupid heels for kids, then she is dead wrong in that aspect!

  39. @Nikki…

    …morning hun…ditto on that gravie name…

  40. @so much to say (always late to the game…oh well…)

    LOL!

  41. Who cares how you talk, as long as it’s correct english when you are in a place of business (i.e work, school…)…otherwise, when you’re with you friends, feel free to talk like a slave, for all I care.

…Now, the only exception is if you talk like “Tom” from Boondocks…

  42. Marshabio

@The Caps Lock button should be banned……

    I swear, so did I… lol…

    Anyway, she sounds quite ignorant.

  43. tanisha

i hear the same thing and you know what, when black people say you dont speak black they are insulting themselves. there is no such thing as speaking black. we all speak english. its insulting and extremely ignorant. how you speak does not make you who you are. get it together. why does she have to be sheltered? its so annoying that you have to stick up for yourself because you had something and others didnt. thats not that persons fault.

  44. Diplomatic Immunity

I sold coke to the girls at her school.(true story)…They would skip school and come to my part of the town. The Hood..Niggas would go crazy when I pulled up with 2-3 skeeted white girls..Stuntin like my daddy….Anyways she was corny then and she corny now…O.J. simpsons kids are fucked in the head too

  45. JMan

I know what she means, people used to say that to me when I was in JHS. But as an adult…other adults compliment me on the way I speak now. Black women are sometimes shocked when they hear a black man pronounce all of his words properly without using any slang or cussing. Speaking properly turns a real woman on…but the hood rats still want their thugs that bring them drama.

Cosby’s daughter doesn’t have any connection with poor people…that’s fine…do you have any connection with the Billionaires that earn $800 million per year?

  46. Marshabio

    *and arrogant*

  47. Diplomatic Immunity

@Jman…but being poor and struggling is reoccurring theme in the black community unfortunately. So theres more people in our community that are poor..Power of the numbers..If we were majority wealthy, than poor people would be the target..Much like white people really dislike their trailer park brethern

  48. classc1

“I don’t really have a connection to other people who didn’t have my lifestyle.”

She sounds like an ass. Sorry. This was just her way of “bragging.” Did we really need to know the “elite” schools she went to? To say that she does not really have a connection to people who didn’t have her lifestyle just shows how truly ignorant that she is. Ironic isn’t is considering Mr. Cosby preaches against ignorance? I HATE when people think that just because of an accident of birth that they are somehow better than. Thank God that folks like Obama and Hil Harper who were privileged enough to attend Harvard Law do not share her backwards views.

  49. ThatGirlLinda

Yeah I can feel her on the talking white I use to get that but I went to good ole public school.. However she could have said her second statement differently. I’m sure alot of people don’t have things in common if they grew up differently whether the rich or not.

  50. as seen on t.v. (R.I.P. K-Swift)

I see all that privileged living, private schools, and proper diction didn’t keep her from the dinner table…She sounds really elitist and removed from reality if she thinks that black people only come in two forms either the really rich or the really poor…SMH at her ignorance…

  51. Morning Bossip peeps!

  52. ThatGirlLinda

Although I can’t stand it when people don’t talk proper that irks me with a passion.

  53. kigali Weaves R 4 Trannies

The pudding pop doesnt fall too far from the freezer.

Nothig demonstrates her feelings of inferiority and insecurity more than the need to differeniate herself from blacks by the way she speaks. You rarely hear people speak about the nuances in the way blacks speak American English according to regional dialects. There is a marked difference between the way blacks in the North East, Deep South, and the West Coast, speak English. There is never any value placed on the way a white person speaks based on their regional dialect. It is always assumed that they speak that way, not because of their education or lack thereof but because of where they are from.

This isnt to say that blacks are especially charitable when it comes to admitting these differences.

    But whatever.

  54. Lisa

“My own people used to say to me, “You speak like a white woman”

But she only feels connected to people that have her lifestyle so obviuosly her “own” people should really be all those “privileged people” and pretty much all of them are a bunch of rich white folks, so that’s her own people.

“But my dad is very into helping people from his own community in Philadelphia”

Exactly HIS own black community that you would never want to be part of.

This is more than just “OH I speak proper English so I have nothing in common with people who look like me”. A lot of us do actually speak proper english but we don’t share her twisted minded mindset. It’s so obvious that this woman wants to separate herself from black people.

  55. realwoman

Also since she was around so many “priveleged” folks, most of them believe in being thin. I guess she only picked up their speach patterns.

    ____________________________________________________

    NOW THIS was funny. lmao

    To Soulwoman and Vinandi….

“She grew up around different races where they spoke like she did, so she didn’t stand out like she did once she broke away from her environment. Black folk are famous for referring to proper speaking as talking “white”. When you say talking white, I think the Paris Hilton/Clueless type.”

And white folk are famous for shunning you and referring to you in a derogatory fashion once you are black period. They will feign surprise if you are Black and speak proper English as well. So let’s stop this whole ‘Blacks told me I talked white boo hoo’ crap when there are whites right within her own community who will make her feel much worse for her skin color, weight, and features alone.

You can tell she is a product of her father’s misery more than of any Black people in neighborhoods she claims to not know much about….

    ___________________________________________________

Princess Aoki I co-sign fully…there are plenty of wealthy people who are just real…she sounds immature and inexperienced which happens to sheltered children wealthy or not. A time will come when her father’s money will mean nothing and she will get a BIG OLE REALITY CHECK! I am not mad at her just sad because her father and mother did not bother to teach her to be humble.

  77. Shavon Denise

I understand what she’s saying because alot of times the other people in the world ( meaning non- Black) concept of Blacks are what they see on TV or only the one or two that they’ve met. So when your a well spoken Black, who isnt speaking like rapper on BET. Yet in this world to ve successful you HAVE to be bi-polar as an African American and I feel a sense that she (Cosby’s daughter)is not in touch with that urban side and thats sad. No matter what might be said about Mr. Cosby he had a way with connecting with all in his prime, even with the Blackest of the Black. I think sometimes in the process of people raising their kids that fail to realize that they have to instill in them the importance to embrace every aspect of who you are.

  78. Boooooooo

I have a huge problem with her statements, because it is what I hear a lot from other Black people who separate themselves from their own people. I grew up in a black neighborhood. It wasn’t “urban” or “the hood”. I’m from “down south”. However, my academic prowess afforded me the ability to participate in activities that took me out of my NEIGHBORHOOD and all across the country. I was always the only black person in my classes. I speak “standard” English. But my INTONATION is very much “black” (if that is what you want to call it). And I have never been accused of being or sounding or acting white.

From what she has said in that short little paragraph, she separates herself from other black people based on status. And she looks at black people as people to be “helped.” Not as equals who happen to live in circumstances other than hers. This attitude sickens me.

I am now an attorney. Building my own practice. And at no time will I think I’m better than the sista around the corner braiding hair at someone else’s shop. That’s the problem with a lot of us who “make it”. We think that our socio-economic status defines who we are.

Your children should know all types of people. Not just the ones in their particular neighborhood. And they should learn the value of different people and to respect and appreciate the people, not the lifestyles.

  84. She sounds crrrrrrrrrrrrrrazy..It seems like all of the best money could not teach her the way of life

It is called Speaking Proper. My parents used to do it..When they were on Business calls..They would speak business like..It is nothing wrong with that, and Maybe this child should of got out there and worked and made something of herself Other than spending Mr Cosby’s money on frivilous shit.

I am not hating on her…and YES BILL is still the fucking man

  85. luckie

Its true! Black folks always wanna say someone sounds “white” if they speak with correct english. I understand what she means. She doesn’t speak like a ghetto hood chick. She wasn’t raised in that type of environment. Why are people getting offended?

  86. Growing up in the “Ghetto” does not automatically mean that you’re gonna turn out to be “ghetto”.

  89. unome

it has nothing to do with talking in the “hip hop way” Black folks been talking that way for awhile waaaaay before hip hop. She AND her father have a problem. Ain’t nuthin wrong with talking proper or White or whatever, but the both of them shit on Black folks who don’t talk like them, call them ignorant and hate them. What Bill and hi daughter need to see is that Black Americans aren’t meant to be the Cosbys, that was a fantasy that won’t be seen.

  90. WhatsYoursIsMine- Saving Myself for Cullen Jones!!! USA! USA!

I can somewhat relate to her on that “speaking white” issue. I grew up in private schools, and if I attended a public school, it was only for a specific magnet program, not my neighborhood school. I never felt different from the other kids until I reached high school.

But I grew up in the inner city so everyone felt I was the exception, not the norm. There are some kids in the hood that can speak in complete sentences.

  91. I am fortunate to have come from the ‘hood’…(some off you may concur) I have a better understanding of how the world really works. IMO to be born with money or to have some type of common sense…Id choose the ladder…money can be made…common sense CANT be bought…

to go a little further on what I said..We have too many crazy people in our families, as friends and etc that truly hold us back And end up ruining us..I know Mommas of Mommas that lease cars and etc for dead broke ass sons and cousins…Fuckin their credit all up…We got to let go of the problems in our lives and homes..Get the crazy people out of our communities, so people of other races and I could care-less about some white people, but since they are in the positions of power, their opinions of us count.

I hate people like that, Is she saying talking in a “hip-hop” way or like a black person means your not intelligent? Her and Bill can go suck it.

My pet peeve is when you meet a black adult who grew up in a middle class or upper class background that acts insanely GHETTO to fit in. I think it’s a cop out for them. They couldn’t make it in their own social circle so they had to step downa notch to be the baddest b!tch.

I am fortunate to have come from the ‘hood’…(some off you may concur) I have a better understanding of how the world really works. IMO to be born with money or to have some type of common sense…Id choose the ladder…money can be made…common sense CANT be bought…

    =============================================================

    I concur.

who cares about this fat ugly bish with her uncle tom/OJ syndrome people like her want the black community to surround them in times of hardship only, ala wesley snipes.

    @ CHRISSY

All African American dont speak “ebonics”. The MAJORITY of us speak proper english at work and “casually” at home. ALL PEOPLE DO THAT. Racist dont go to most job calling blacks n*gger out loud, but they do in the comfort of there own community.

Your confusing society problem with black problem. Ignorance isn’t a black problem. And if you dont like those stereotypes used to define African Americans make sure you dont buy into them.

  102. Boooooooo

I’m trying to figure out what this whole “urban” side is. There are only a few “urban” areas in this country. That means there are more black people who didn’t grow up in “urban” areas, than there are who did.

People tend to buy into what they get force fed through the media and entertainment. Growing up poor doesn’t mean you grew up hood. Or “urban”. You just grew up poor. And your socio-economic status should not define who you are as a person.

@Chrissy… what does it mean to know the “right” people? Are the people “right” because their money is “Right”? Because I can guarantee you a lot of those people with “right” money, are as WRONG as they come. They lack any sense of character, values, or anything that speaks to who they are as a person as opposed to merely speaking to what they “have” as in possessions.

Because I can see from what she’s stated, that her “aptitude” is lacking…

Fact-not gossip. She used to have a bad drug problem, I guess that is privileged behavior-not sure if crack is . She used to fuck with Mike Tyson- that is not the behavior of the privileged. Mike is so honest, don’t believe me Bossip just ask him. That hip hop way? If those hip hop concert walls could talk. A boutique in Tribeca, on whose dime? I like mine the hip hop way-self earned.

  106. Serenity

It seems that she is perpetuating the reverse of the same stereotype she is complaining about…she should think twice before speaking…no matter the dialect.

  108. @NIK: Let me just say it was HELL! I feel sorry for those families in CT. 1 Killed and I don’t know how many shot, I was there with my cousins they live there but they said it’s never been like that b4! never have to worry about the kid going again!

  109. I didn’t read all the comments yet so I don’t know if anyone said this yet, but she is write. As more black people become high income earners, there will be more black people like her who have little exposure to black culture. Which, by the way, is not necessarily hip hop culture. Even the children of the most hardcore gangster rap will be just like her if they live in wealthy neighborhoods and go to private schools. They will be more comfortable with “mainstream” America than black folks. As much as I love Diggy on Run’s House I see a white wife in his future.

I wonder do she sell Valtrex at her store….

She wouldn’t last 5 minutes in the ‘hood if she opened her mouth and started talking.

  113. Lala

It would seem that her privileged background was wasted on her, because she seems to NOT have common sense, the ability to be humble and gratitude…

    How unfortunate…

@ mz. cee and real woman

I try not to go there, but this comment makes me so mad.

So congratulations on your boutique. Wish you much sucess but I do have one question.

Your father put NBC back on the map in the 80s. Bringing the network tons of cash and taking it back to the #1 spot. So when he tried to the buy the network and they turned him down was it because he talked in the hip-hop way in the meeting?

Your priveleged upbringing allows you to own a shop. Your father tried to own a media conglomerate. No amount of white talking would allow this.

This is why he is so mad. He knows that the images/stereotypes that whites and some priveleged blacks including his own children have about black people kept him from having true power in the television industry.

He feels powerless against fighting whites so he turns his anger on himself and the people and places that he comes from.

The same way when I got angry I slickly called you fat. I aplogize. No need to attack your appearance, your ignorant comments can stand on their own.

  117. @AUNT VIV: (HUGS)!!!!!!!
