Venus Williams is on the latest cover of Shape magazine, and has won Wimbledon:
Venus Williams won her fifth Wimbledon singles title Saturday, beating younger sister Serena Williams 7-5, 6-4 in the final. Defending champion Venus is 5-2 in Wimbledon finals, losing only to Serena in 2002 and ‘03. The win at the All England Club gave Venus her seventh major title.

Venus looks great, and she and Serena performed wonderfully this week. On ESPN yesterday, the commentators compared Venus to other tennis greats, such as Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, and Steffi Graf. She and her sister are truly champions and will, undoubtedly, be remembered for generations to come.

Folks obvisouly don’t understand just how important what the sisters have accomplished really is. Tennis is a sport historically reserved for the wealthy and upper class. To be trained/coached by your father on what essentially amounts to a jacked-up vacant parking lot in the hood and then to turn around and dominate a sport that you were not professionally trained in….is simply miraculous and both ladies derserve their props and all the accolades we can give them. Whom they decide to date is irrelevant to what they accomplished. Yep, 2 1/2 mill for 6 hours…not bad..not bad at all.
Just imagine if the playing feild was even and the kids in the hood had the same opportunities as others…just imagine what they could do givem the chance.
Please don’t foget….More folks watch tennis (in the history of Tennis) when the sisters play and more folks watch golf( in the history of Golf)when Tiger plays. Ratings translate into dollars.

Tyra has graced the cover of Shape May 07. Venus may not be the first AA on the cover. One of a handful to be sure. Maria Sharapova is NOT retired. Anna Kournikova IS the one semi retired. If you have not ranked as #1 or #3 or # 8 (hell 20 will do) in the World for any type of tennis at some point in you life do not disparage the commitment, sacrifices, and hard work of these lily white “hoes ” in to such ranking. If you don’t come from the Former Soviet Union or Siberia (having to move because of the Chernobyl disaster) don’t bother disparaging these girls. If your parents didn’t work extra jobs to get you lessons, visa restrictions kept you away from your moms an ocean apart for two years, you spent time traveling to practice on your dad’s bicycle to practice, or serious back/spinal issues have shattered your decent tennis career do not disparage. If you weren’t the youngest player to debut on any competitive stage in tennis don’t disparage these girls. If you haven’t defeated formidable opponent Serena at the age of 17 as Maria has at least once in your life or came up as runner up to both sisters in doubles as Anna do not disparage. Shoot if you never got as far as playing with the goddesses of tennis Serena or Venus do not disparage these girls. I’m not disputing the kick ass hell yeah of the sisters awesomeness, and their superb representation for the black comunity. Just making sure that people with a resume full of park tennis don’t become experts on the work ALL these women put to get where they ended up..

It’s funny how I was watching the news this morning and they were talking about how great the men’s singles were and all that and didn’t mention a thing about the women’s singles. Maybe because they were upset about the sisters dominating the 1st and 2nd place?

The media never gives these women their proper due. They have been tearing up the tennis scene for a quite a few years now and this is like the 7th time they have had to play each other in the finals because they end up being their own best competition. The media seems more concerned with discrediting their father as a “mad Black man” when all he does is tell the truth about the hate his daughters have experienced. He has raised a couple of gems and it is good to see them do their thing.

And I agree. I’ve noticed and read sport commentary making a note of the lack of showmanship for the sisters v the mens. I think they deserve their proper props. On the one hand racism is still a problem, but I think the fact they are sisters and they have been getting their gold, the people in MSM just don’t think it’s news worthy. Like it’s expected. I don’t think so. I think they are legendary and they did get people excited about tennis again….

Jaime, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I am a tremendous fan of Venus and her beauty radiates from within. She is truly a class act. I really appreciate the fact that she represents black women as strong and has grace in the face of adversity. You don’t hear any stories of her stumbling around drunk, flashing her twat, and acting like an ass whenever a call during her tennis match doesn’t go her way.

Whoever made the comment about Venus and Serena being uneducated obviously doesn’t know anything about them. Venus has her college degree, a clothing line and may I add a very successful clothing line called Eleven and my girl Serena speaks several languages and has tons of endorsements. Venus is spokesperson for WTA for players rights and was the biggest reason why men and women tennis players are paid equally. So, if anyone thinks they are dumb it is because they do not know their history and are must be definitely envious of them. Hell, America is the one place that opportunities are available to everyone. Black people do not know how to stop “hating” on each other enough to learn something from successful people such as Venus and Serena because they are too busy envying them.
