Last week Clint Eastwood had what some would call a “racist moment” when he said Spike Lee should “shut his face.” Here’s Lee’s response:
‘First of all, the man is not my father and we’re not on a plantation. The thing about it though, I didn’t personally attack him. And a comment like “a guy like that should shut his face” - come on Clint, come on. He sounds like an angry old man right there. Even though he’s trying to have a Dirty Harry flashback,’ he said. ‘I’m going to take the Obama high road and end it right here.’”
LMAO at Spike giving that corpse-like buster the old brush off in true Obama-esque form and fashion. A classy move, for real.

I think Spike would have come out better by providing historical information to support the fact that Black Soldiers did take part in allowing Americans to be able to plant that flag. Hence providing an educated reponse to the ignorant comment that Eastwood made about Black soldiers not being relevant in the movie. Taking the high road is only effective when it provides some education along with it.

Tell your story to Lt. Cmdr. McPhatter, a Black man amongst the approximately 900 soldiers that were present at the battle of Iwo Jima. They were there mainly in a supply role but the fighting became so fierce, they spent their time firing their rifles right next to their Caucasian counterparts. McPhatter also said he was there during the flag raising (he helped construct the pole) but the exclusion of Blacks in the movie did not surprise him since during the war the cameramen filming the newsreel (propoganda films used to build up war support back home) would turn there cameras away from black soldiers so nobody would see them in the U.S. I mean damn, it took until the 90’s for ANY of the millions of Blacks that participated in WWII to get any award or official recognition. No, that’s not racist. (Spike Lee should do his own movie about LT. CDR. McPhatter)

I totally agree with Spike Lee on this one. Mr. Eastwood got his feathers ruffled and didnt understand what Spike was trying to say. Spike wasnt trying to revision history. If there was no black soldiers who raised the flag then so be it. But like Illuminate Truth says if a black soldier helped construct the flagpole, how can that not be in the film. What Spike called Clint Eastwood on was a lack of real historical research and that is what you do if you are going to do a historical film. Telling someone too shut up is not racisist. Let’s not be so quick too throw that word around. He didn’t like what he said so he told he too shut-up. There is nothing racisist about that. In the movie that Spike Lee is talking about that was a specific event and there were no black men at that particular event. NO one is saying black men were not in WWII. But, here is a thought for Mr. Lee, he complained about Oliver North about his war movies and now Clint, do some research and you make a movie about black men in those wars. I don’t think someone white will get the same story as Spike would. If it will be anything like his Katrina story it will be a masterpiece.

His movies have taken a mainstream feel lately but I kind of knew that was coming. He should do a remake of “The Spook Who Sat by the Door”, a book written by Sam Greenlee in the 60’s and made into a movie in 1973 by Ivan Dixon. The book and movie are hard to find now since the powers that be in Hollyweird tried to blackball it. Didn’t work….I have copies of both. If Spike would do something like that, he would redeem himself. Here’s a quote from the author:

In fact, “Girlfriends” showed too many positive black females at one time so the CW had to cut the show without a finale. “The Game” (which is entertaining but not on the same level as GF-with Toni Childs) is still on but beginning next season, the show will air on Fridays at 8pm. Now no one can tell me that CW is not trying to get rid of the color on thier station!
I say Viacom/BET need to step up and buy real sitcoms and handle the reruns later

There are various ways to deliver information. The big screen is just one of them. I will NEVER let a Clint Eastwood teach myself or my children Black history but I still commend Spike Lee on speaking up on Eastwood’s obvious shortcomings in the movie’s research and accurate representation of ALL people involved in this one symbolic act of the war.
What people fail to realize is that Clint Eastwood reaches a certain group that Spike will never reach just because of his skin color combined with his fearless exposure of a corrupt system in his movies. That is where Eastwood failed. HE should be the one to let whites know that Blacks were also helping out and no matter how lowly their jobs, they did help out with that flag in some way.

If you never read the book “Spook”, it is about a Black man who plays the Uncle Tom role in order to obtain a job as an agent for the CIA. After earning the job he begins to learn the secrets of the CIA (guerilla warfare, covert ops, weaponry, etc.) and subsequently teaches these tactics to the gangs of Chicago to prepare for a Revolution. Imagine that same type ish using the gangs of today (Bloods,Crips,etc.) If you can find a copy of the book or movie it is worth while to read or see. When I went to buy a copy from Borders (or Barnes and Noble..can’t remember) I could only get a used copy and then they wanted my driver’s liscense. Any other time I requested a book all they needed was a phone number but this time they wanted to make sure Big Brother could see. (I buy ALL books in cash on purpose).

The reason why there are no positive black shows that air on major networkds such as CBS/ABC/NBC is because of poor ratings. I think that major networks have made attempts to produce positive black shows but they all get cancelled due to poor ratings. I don’t think it’s a media conspiracy to get rid of black TV shows it’s just that it’s become a waste of money. Which is also why there aren’t a lot of black films at the theaters…poor sales!
BTW, “Girlfriends” was cancelled due to poor ratings…not a conspiracy!

I work for an Advertising Agency so I will tell you the following:
1. Girlfriends was the highest AA show as far as ratings were concerned & the show was soo popular that if renewed it wouldve surpassed the Cosby show as the most episodes/seasons for an AA show
2. Gossip Girl has still been renewed DESPITE horrible ratings. Infact, the CW argues that the reason for GG’s bad ratings is b/c the show can be scene online. That excuse is BOGUS b/c Desperate Housewives episodes are also offered online & that show continues to have good ratings
3. You cannot compare the CW line up to CBS, Fox or NBC b/c the latter stations target the general market (age 25-54)
4. The CW/UPN have always targeted the niche market (women 18-34) & (men 18-34) - The AA market is a niche market so what has the CW gained from canceling “Girlfriends”?
5. Despite failing ratings of “Gossip Girl” the CW continues to offer shows with the same story line and char. makeup. EX.) Beverly Hills 90210 & Surviving Filthy Rich (All these shows follow rich mainstream kids so why do I need to see 3 diff versions of this show on the same network)
6. Stylista by Tyra Banks is also a new show but we know how mainstream that will be(not that I have a prob with that)
QUESTION: How do you cancel the highest rated AA sitcom (which can make history) without a season finale?
THE REAL PROBLEM: Advertisers truly dont appreciate the black dollar. Articles report that advertisers are rooting for Gossip Girl due to “promise” and not “ratings” but “Girlfriends” had “ratings” and a diminishing “promise”

Clint happened to have his ducks in a row this time and therefore could comfortably tell Spike to shut his pie hole. The fact that he made a movie about Charlie Parker received very little recognition from Spike at the time but he’s quick to jump on him about Flags Of Our Fathers which focused on a small and specific group of men not every man involved in that war. And why do we spend so much time jumping on Spike’s bandwagon instead of being alarmed by his gratuitous titty scenes. Wake up folks. The Sun is out.

I tell you, for a group of people who own no major television stations, major movie production companies, major television companies, major advertising companies, major financial institutions, you sure do have a lot of demands.
It’s not so much racism as it is a result of having no voice. We, as black people, own very little, thus we have very little bargaining chips. Yet, we are the loudest to bark when something does not go our way.
Even if there were a million black people who raised the flag and Clint still decided to not have a single one in the movie, he’s footing the bill and does not have to cater to you regardless of history.

Just trying to get info on what “y’all wrong” is stating because those are very profound accusations. I’m not saying Brother is wrong since the Illumanati is a SECRET organization but Black men being directly involved seems remote at best. I was hoping he could shed more light (=truth) on his statements beyond that “he is living it”.
Your point about doing it right is well taken. My hope when I post on this site is to go beyond the typical rhetoric and exchange knowledge with ANYONE about ANYTHING in hopes that I can learn SOMETHING. If two people exchange a dollar then those people end up with exactly what they started with; but when two people exchange knowledge they both end up with more than they began with therefore becoming richer. (Not mines, I paraphrased Muhammad Ali talking about how knowledge is worth more that money)

You are right about not having the bargaining chips. (Tyler Perry though?) The limited bargaining chips that we do have is our buying power since our race spends more of our money (as opposed to saving) than any other race. A Black economist (sorry, forgot his name off hand) once said if 30% of Blacks did not buy anything during the XMAS season (TOTAL boycott) that we could bring retail America to her knees. Can we sacrifice our children not getting the latest sneakers, video game, etc. for one year? Owning our own production companies, tv stations, etc. would be a start but sometimes I think we need to turn the idiot box off anyway and start from there.

Spike shouldn’t be surprised by the omission of blacks from the film. It has been happening for years, the only way to change HIS-Story is to rewrite it the correct way through research and attention to detail
