Here’s Blair Underwood’s response to the “backlash” he faced from black fans after he appeared on Sex And The City:
“Underwood, the first African-American actor to join the sitcom’s predominantly white cast, played Miranda Hobbs’ boyfriend, Dr. Robert Leeds - a role which he claims didn’t meet the approval of some fans. But the Dirty Sexy Money star insists his female fans relented after learning he has been married to Desiree DaCosta, a black woman, for 13 years.
He says, ‘In terms of the black female audience, usually in your body of work if you’ve proven that you love your sisters and will come back home, they will give you a pass when you jump ship. I hear it all the time. I heard, “We’ll get you a pass because we know you’re married to a black woman.”‘
Blair is the ultimate specimen and Desiree is a very lucky woman. Period.

Its called the right to pay or not pay to see a movie.. If the black male can date who he wants to then we can support who we want to - end of story.. I could care less personally when black men date outside the race, but I do understand when some black women get upset when they see a brotha with a white woman. I can go back all the way to slavery, but no need for a history lesson here. Unfortunately, the issue here is there are rarely positive images of healthy, loving relationships between black men and women on TV or in film. For years the media has made it clear that black women are not attractive and not worthy. So when some black women do see black men in relationships with white women - whether in th media or in real life - it almost feels like a slap in their faces.

The reason why some black females are irritated with black men dating white women is because we know that many black men are simply “color-struck”. The have bought into society’s preference for white skin and features and believe these features to represent beauty. Even in a situation where a black actor is just pretending to date a white actress in a movie it is still fustrating to see this preference play out.
In fact, not to long ago there was an article in Newsweekd titled “Why Can’t a Black Actress Play the Girlfriend,” in which the author pointed out that several recent movies with prominent black actors used white or latino actresses to play the leading female roles yet when was the last time you saw a black actress casted as the girlfriend for a white actor. Something New and that Coming to Dinner movie don’t really count because the whole premise of the movie was about interracial dating, but even if you count them they are only two examples. Meanwhile Eve Menedez has been Denzel’s love interest in two of his movies and opposite Will Smith once and before the end of her career Julia Stiles will probably date every known black actor on screen as well.
But I will agree that sometimes some black women, myself included, take it too far. Jumping to conclusions everytime I see a successful black men with a white women and assuming that she is just his trophy. After reading Blair’s statements I decided that I’m just not going to allow myself to feel slighted by the sight of black men with a white women anymore. Although, I personally know several black men who have dated white women just because they were white, but still I’m not going to assume the worse for ever other interracial couple I see or even concern myself with that bs anymore.
Good Lord, why is anyone going to trip about Blair dating Miranda on Sex and the City. It’s called a role. The people who trip me out are the ones like Kanye who talk so much shit about white people and then he goes and cheats on his fiancee with a bunch of white girls. Such a total hypocrite.

what is the problem with him getting a role in movie based on a television show with a predominately cast? good for him and good for Jennifer Hudson who was cast in the movie as well. Sarah Jessica Parker acknowledged in Newsweek (I believe that’s where I read the article) that she is very proud of the fact not to mention an honor to have opportunity to add people of color to the cast because it was many of those very people who were faithful viewers and made the show such a success. Let’s give props to our people as they continue to strive for success and tear down barriers.

There is a disease in the black community called self-hate. The reason SOME black women get angry is that we are sick and tired of bruthas using us as an excuse to date outside their race. My brother is married to a white woman, but he is not color struck, thank God for that. He sees his wife as a good woman with good qualities, not a color or race.
Having said that, I think black women need to open our options and be willing to accept love from men other than black men. We cannot control who someone dates or happens to fall in love with, but we sure can rise to our highest and draw the right person our way regardless of their color. No point in wasting our time and energy being angry.

I think what is many time overlooked is that black women are reduced to such despicable levels in favor of dating outside of the race. If a man dates outside of their race thats fine, but don’t say its because a black woman is a ho. If you stop looking for a ho then you won’t find one. And thats for any race.
By the way, I truly believe that love is love is love. The problem comes in when you “solely” use race as a basis for picking out a partner.
