JHud’s Token Role
Posted by Bossip Staff
Here are some old pics of Jennifer Hudson on location filming the Sex and the City movie. Sarah Jessica Parker reveals why JHud was chosen for the part of her assistant:
“First of all we needed to have a 20-year-old in this movie; we really have to remember that there is a significant audience now that are very, very young. “It’s a great way of reminding people who Carrie was when she came to New York; what was New York, what did it mean to her…And African-American women and women of color have been a big part of our audience for a long time (and) we really haven’t been responsible to them.”
Damn, at least they are telling the truth, we can pretty much count on one hand the amount of black people that have been on that show. Not including that BS when Blair Underwood was casted as Miranda’s boyfriend. SMH.

Who said my husband’s name?
How is it that you are making this seem like a bad thing? It’s good that they reached out to the black audience. I’m not sure I’d call her a token. I’m happy for her getting the part. She can fall back on an acting career if/when her singing career doesn’t work out.
hope she does well can’t wait to see the movie
In addition
Are you dismissing the fact that they are also counting on her to bring in the youthful viewers. I think this is a testament to and a trial of her box office power. This can really be big for Jennifer. I’m happy for her.
When we are ignored we get mad… I was never a fan of Sex inthe City but they should play to the audience. They want our money. Not that JHud would convenience me to go see the movie… They should have cast Blair if they wanted to me consider it…LOL
I am more inclined to see the movie after this statement. At least they are making some attempt to include blacks and that is more than most of hollywood does. Hopefully Jennifer’s role will be sizable and not a cameo.
Im glad for jenny though… She doing better than most Idol losers…no that im calling her a loser…u know what I mean
I think that Jennifer is so pretty.
I am so looking forward to seeing this movie on the 30th! I cannot wait, I cannot wait!
y not keisha cole? or even laura london, or even Megs, ooh la la. A. Keys would of been a treat as well. Cats ain’t trying to go to this lilly white film to see no got damn Jenny, no sorry not a sex symbol. girl can sing but this ain’t that kind of flick eff the casting director.
A noble effort by the Sex & The City cast. Too little too late if you ask me.
I never got into this show, never watched, largely in part because I really had no interest in a show devoid of any minority representation. Glad that JHud got an opportunity to act once again, but I’ll wait to catch it on cable…(and only then because she’s in it)
I don’t think this is a token role. Honestly there aren’t a wide range of positions available to young people in the fashion industry…either you model or you are a fashion assistant…then you work your way up. I believe she will do well in this role hopefully she’ll have more than two lines. SMH @ keyshia cole acting…I don’t think she would have fit this movie at all. Laren or A. Keys would have be good too, but J. Hud will do this part justice.
How long the show was on? Since ‘98 I think. And now they realize they haven’t recognized African-Africans like. Never seen an episode of that show. But I know in the community I grew up in, “Sex & the City” wasn’t really talked about amongst urban women. It’s all about getting the ‘Black Dollar’. Anyway, I always thought “Girlfriends” would of been cool if they had a platform like HBO. Maybe its me but I feel this whole “Sex & the City” shyt is overrated. Especially here in New York where the movie was filmed.

I’m glad for Jennifer H. Good Luck, Lady!!!
I think jennifer husdson is really beautiful. I want to see more from her in the years to come.
@Neo-Geo BET ain’t paying for a movie showing us with professionalism, with a law firm huh! the keyan brothers would have to privatly fund it, but they might send it straight to bootleg they so crazy.
OMFG! Get over it! Either you love the show OR you don’t! It’s about women, friendships and relationships period!!! So sick of people making things out of nothing!!!
I’m glad that they finally see the importance of their african-american female audience. But, Jennifer Hudson is an Academy award winning actress & the best role they could drum up for her is as an assistant?!
SMH at that Little Orphan Annie synthetic wig on her head!
Cool show but disappinting that it had no black representation considering that Sara Jessica Parker has a black sister in real life. No one ever mentions that.
please stop wearing spandex or stretch leggings,
being big aint a problem
but u cant just wear anything and everything. Some things is meant for sticks n’ bones
then some things is meant for curves and meat.
For the record Sex & The City had black women on their show.
The episode when Carrie had a female black limo driver who bought her that hotdog at Grey’s Papaya
The episode when Samantha dated the black rapper {the one who Carrie said wore more diamonds than P.Diddy} his sister went off on Samantha in the middle of the club remember? She told Samantha no amount of J-Lo dresses is gonna make you black honey!
Then there was the episode when Carrie gave the speech at the learning Annex on where to go to find single men…well there was a bald headed sista in the audience!
There you have it, 3 black women have been on Sex & The City!!!
test
I didn’t know Sara had a black sister- how so?
J-Hud’s wardrobe looks cheap & un-flattering. Why did they give her that cheap wig?
LOVE J-Hud, and will see anything she is in, but when I heard that they cast her as the assistant, I was totally pissed. I just accepted a VP role at a major financial services firm, and I get tired of Black folks playing supporting roles: the assistant, the security guard at the chic store, the mail room clerk. Nothing wrong with these positons in and of themselves, but these are the roles people of color are always steered towards–not the positions of power. J-Hud as Carrie’s assistant?–what kind of message is that sending to young women of color who go to see the movie. We should be telling our yong people not to BE someone’s assistant but to HAVE an assistant. That’s power!
@ least SJP kept it real.
I was annoyed that the only recurring Black role on the show was Blair’s, but he’s so yummy, I just enjoyed watching him.
It would have been nice to have some real minority representation, but at the end of the day SATC was a great show and there’s no denying that.
I’m a huge fan of Seinfeld (yes, we all know Michael Richards –Kramer– is a racist fool). There were no Black main characters- but the show was hilarious.
We certainly need more minority representation on tv, but we can acknowledge the few truly funny, well-done programs that might not have Blacks on them.

lovely and amazing

^^They definitely wouldn’t mention it if they aren’t close or SJP doesn’t talk about her or bring her to events…there would be no point.
That’s an interesting tidbit though.
And JHud is the only Oscar winner in the cast… that’s got to count for something.
oooooo
noonesassistant!

^^^You’re so right; I’ve grown up in a family with Black women holding executive roles (just like many others I know) and that reality is not reflected on tv or in films. I think we’re forgetting something though- they just needed to fill a role.
This is SATC- there are no important roles other than those 4 women and their love interests. SJP’s character needed an assistant. Instead of getting a White woman to play the role, they decided to give it to a young, popular Black woman because they felt bad about not representing us during the span of the original program. Those characters are in their late 30s (40s really since the show has been gone for a few yrs)- Carrie’s assistant is in her 20s. There are no extra “friend” roles available in this show/movie. JHud is most likely the only young-adult in the film.
I don’t think they are trying to send any messages to Black girls in this particular film- they were just trying to be inclusive.
They could have just as easily had a White girl or another minority play the assistant. It doesn’t really matter to them at the end of the day because the film is about the 4 main characters and is going to make an INSANE amount of money.
wth. why those boots? ooooooooo, whay those curls…..ooooh…why that purple and blue class of 2008 gear? wth!!
DAM SHE LOOK GOOD

I LOVE YOU!!! You are one of the only BLACK FEMALES I have ever heard discredit this DEVOID OF BLACK show. Do I have a problem with it being white production? NOT AT ALL. My problem is that whenever we have opportunity for a Black production, we insert some square peg cracka in somewhere to patronize these naive racist bastards (ie; DRUMLINE, GIRLFRIENDS, EVE, etc…).
Sad thing is, like 80% of the Black women I know will have their silly asses right there, front row on opening day. SEX AND THE CITY parties and all. FOOLS.
QUESTION: ‘WHAT SEX AND THE CITY CHARACTER REPRESENTS YOU?’ (is the inquiry often posed on Black females personals pages (like BP and myspace)
ANSWER: NONE, BECAUSE YOUR ASS WILL NEVER BE FLAT, YOUR NOSE POINTY, YOUR SKIN NEVER PINK AND RED BURNED IN THE SUN, AND YOU WILL ALWAYS BE NOTHING BUT SOME “FAT ASS” EXPERIENCE TO A WHITE MAN. NOT his wife!
PS; SARAH JESSICA PARKER IS UGLY AS A 2 DIMENSIONAL HORSE ON A CAROUSEL.
OH, AND THEY DONT WANT YOUR BLACK ASS LIVING DOWN ON PARK AVENUE.
NEGRA, PLEASE!
@ Da Darkness
Yeah, you right. That would of been too much for “Mainstream America” to handle. Joan at a prestigious law firm, Maya developing into an author, Toni having her own real-estate business, and Lynn with her five post-graduate degrees. That would of been too much “Black people doing their thang” for HBO to cope with. If anything ‘Girlfriends’ was a bit underrated considering they could only stretch so far since they’re on network TV. Plus you had Kelsey Grammer as a producer.
The #1 STRAIGHT BLACK MAN FAN of SATC, I resspect & feel that comment about them not focusing on the Black women audience, but all in all SATC is a GREAT show, the writing was excellent and relatable. In case U forgot: Season 3 episode “No ifs, ands, or Butts” Samantha was dealing with a Black man who worked at Tommy Boy Records, he was “nailing” Samantha in that episode. Check it out and that was before Blair Underwood & Miranda.
No one gives a shit about black people anywhere in this freaky world all we gotta do is pray for God’s protection and love coz hes the only one who cares
I just had to comment on the last bit regarding Blair Underwood on SATC. I agree that was some BS casting. Let’s be real why would someone as fine as Blair go with someone looking like Miranda. I know they say that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder but damn even Stevie Wonder could see that was a mismatch. Totally unrealistic!
Although I don’t appreciate her playing an Assistant. I will tune in just to watch and support her.
Sex and the City was a well written show PERIOD. I never got into the whole Friends or Seinfeld thing but I could relate to this show because it was about the strength you find in friendships while exploring relationships with the opposite sex. I liked Girlfriends as well. We just need more shows for minorities where we are not stereotypes. Instead, we get reality shows that make us appear uneducated, loud and confrontational. Maybe we should stop supporting the trash which will send a message to sponsors and networks that we will not just watch anything.
AfroJu- actually they were being realistic with the pairing of Miranda & Blairs characters…didn’t you know successful black men go for the homely white woman?
At least in Miranda’s defense she WAS a partner at a law firm at least she wasn’t a waitress or something

LOL. When was the last POSITIVE wayans brother movie you saw? Did I miss something? They just make hood jokes and laugh at white girls. A serious dialogue would be too much for them to handle.
I think Miranda was the cutest on the show and the one I related to the most. They could’ve used JHUD as a neighbor or something-I dont like the fact they cast her in a service roll but she obviously didnt care and took the roll.Im going to see the movie for sure because I liked the show. I hope by SJP just now speaking out about the lack of representation of black women in the series, isnt because the movie has received negative reviews and they atleast want to get the black money, since the majority probably wont fukk with the movie since the critics opinion’s are that the movie sucks.
Wasn’t going to watch this bumba clot movie anyway!!
so because they threw in a token black actress, makes it ok!! f that!
Girlfriends should be made into a movie

wow, three black folks! what were their roles?
The Help
Rapper
an Extra
yet these lily white women are:
corporate exec
writer
attorney
socialite
AMAZING!!!!!
The show was good and that’s that!
We always have to complain - Black people make 10% of the population - so how can we always expect to see black representation.
News flash - there are plenty of white people who go about the day to day life without befriending or dating black people. It’s not a racist thing - it’s just reality.
How many true white friends do you have??
get over it!
Oh - I’m a black woman from NY in case you are wondering???
for thos who r already tryin to discredit jhud n what shes will bring to the movie.. b reminded that she was nominated for several oscars on her acting debut… i think she won too…
i am a fan of sex in the city.. n i cant wait to c the movie..
ooh n @ lovely one.. girlfriends went wrong when they got rid of my girl toni
LOL @Jahpson….great Point of views…
u kno yall r funny..
obviously certain shows are to appeal to a certain demographic.. y r ‘we’ knockin sex and the city when we have movies tailor made for us.. that tyler perry.. how many white ppl does he have in his movies??.. im not tryin to offend any1… i love his movies…
I love the show. My roommate and I would watch it religously. I can enjoy a show if it doesn’t have Black people in it. It was about women and relationships, something WE all can relate to. I loved the characters and I am so glad Jennifer Hudson has a role in it, because honestly they did not have to include her. In the series SJP didn’t even have an assistant.
@ da darkness - Alicia Keys is waaaayyyyy too big a star for such a role. At any rate, it’s a “chick flick” for the most part. They do not need to cast it for the mass appeal of men. The shows 4 major stars are not all that “hot looking” either.
I am a SATC fan and I am looking forwad to this movie.
I hope she does well in it.
All the Jhud fans are going to get mad but I have to say it I cannot believe she didn’t lose weight at least when she knew she was going to be in this movie where fabulous fashion rules just my opinion.
I watched SATC every season and was never offended by the lack of black actors. The storyline was about the day to day life of 4 white women and their friends. There were always black people in the restaurants, boutiques, walking along the streets, club settings, etc.. I enjoyed the show strictly from a female perspective - clothes, relationships, cocktails with the girls, etc…It’s not that deep - just entertainment..
What about the episode where Samantha dates the black guy and his sister doesn’t want him to date a white woman?
If they had casted Rihanna for the role then anyone who saw the movie would think all black women are prostitutes
Fact
Im still waiting for Jennifer to lose the Dreamgirls weight she claimed to have put on for the role of Effie.
What a liar!! always talking about how difficult it was for her to eat fattening foods when she’s naturally inclined to eat healthy I rmember this liar telling Barb Walters that her real size was smaller than what she was on American Idol? Yeah Right!!
@Encyclopedia Brown Please Shut the Eff Up Negroe Joe!
How can Rhianna be any worst than the resident whore of the show SAMANTHA!!!! That broad screwed men, clergy, women, the geriatric set. And as for the remaining cast members they werent no better! Didn’t Charlotte have sex in a limo w/ a rock star on her 1st date??? And in another episode Miranda had VD the nasty broad had to call everyone she slept with & kept forgetting their names!
The only one they kept virtuosu was Carrie & that’s only cuz she was the Executive Producer so she got to call all the shots from the very beginning.
Stop placing white women on pedestals cuz they the main ones doing lines of coke & having kinky 3 somes in hotel bathrooms - they’re nasty point blank!!
I will be in the theater with bells on.
It’s a freaking movie it’s not real life fiction.I rarely living in manhattan see a group of women that hang out black and white. It’s rare to see 4 black women hangin out like that at manolo saks or even bergdorff it was about upper east side white chicks ,white women that live in the village ..now if it was baised on 4 women in harlem i would have expected to see some sisters.it wasn’t that serious .Only sister I know chilling in the hamptons was star jones.people taking tv to seriously. It’s entertainment don’t like it start producing ya own shi8.and stop complaining.
Why does she have to be Carrie’s assistant? Aren’t there some talented writers who are Carrie’s peers at Essence, Upscale, etc?
The more things change, the more they stay the same!
Couldn’t they have picked a more stunning looking black woman, not one that looks like Li’l Orphan Fat Annie.
I’m not trying to read all the negative comments about my girl JHud ’cause I believe I still got some active warrants!
Lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OK!
I AM A HYPOCRIT ON THIS ONE…
ONE ONE HAND IT PISSES ME OFF WHEN SHOWS LIKE SEX, FRIENDS, & SEINFELD HAVE BARELY A BLACK SOLE APPEAR IN 7, 8, 9 SEASONS.
ON THE OTHER HAND I HAVE NO PROBLEM WHEN A “BLACK” TV SHOW OR MOVIE COMES OUT WITH NO OR JUST A FEW WHITES IN A “TOKEN” ROLE!!!
WE ALL KNOW THE DEAL. IF GIVEN A CHANCE WHITES WILL MAKE A PROJECT WITHOUT US SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY DONT WANT US IN IT!
WHEN WE GET THE CHANCE TO MAKE SOMETHING WE EXCLUDE THEM TO GIVE MORE OF “US” AN OPPORTUNITY.
She looks so cute. Love her
Love sex in the city. Premier went down a storm in London
Token role? Why does every big trend of show, movie, or theater have to have a black person in every production? Not everyone has black friends or black people in their inner circle, just as other people of color like asians, blacks , and hispanics don’t always have other races in their inner circle. It’s cool for them to add her because one, she’s only done one other movie so she really isn’t a A list actor (even those she has an oscar) and it’s cool to add her to such a huge project with such little experience (other actors with much longer resumes would kill for a spot in this film), and two, this movie will kick ass whether blacks go to see it or not, so they didn’t have to add her. What a bunch of messy trouble makers you guys at bossip can be! Just be happy for her and stop hating!
Could they please make her look good.
Always an after thought1
WAS CASTED????
Don’t sleep there will be LOTS OF SISTAHS in line to see this movie, I loved this show. These are some funny, crazy white ladies.
She is so fricking adorable! she looks great! i wish i could find an outfit like that in her first picture looks so cute ^^
