An interrupted lady was charged for a Myspace suicide after she posed as a a 16 year-old boy and tried to get at a young girl with some Myspace harassment. The little girl later committed suicide. SMH.

That headline doesn’t give you enough information. The woman wasn’t trying to “get at her” as in molest her or something, she set up an account that looked like it belonged to a handsome young guy and acted like an e-boyfriend to her. She strung her along for a long time pretending to be great friends with her, then abruptly started treating her like *#&$ and telling her that “the world would be better off without her.”
The kicker is this - the adult woman knew for a fact that the girl was diagnosed at depressed, seeing a counselor, and *on medication for depression*.
Evil isn’t a strong enough word for what that woman did. How she could be a mother and still do that to a child escapes me, and I don’t even have kids!

I remember this case…the story is old by the fact that this lady is now being charged with criminal acts is new….she was extremely reckless to get involved with teenage girl issues… I think there was issue between her daughter and the girl who commited suicide so the mother that it would be a good idea to get her back by posing as a boy on Myspace to get to her and then started saying horrible things to her…this lady deserves to be locked up

This is very sad but the woman did not make her kill herself. She tried before to kill herself and did not succeed. Her mother needs to take some responsibility for not getting her child some help. Her mother wants someone to pay for her daughter’s depression.
Poor girl…she was totally manipulated by a grown woman. if you read the whole story it’s incredibly sad- the woman who tricked the girl pretended to be friends with the girl’s family and even comforted the parents after the girl’s death.

1. I think the story is incredibly sad as well. HOWEVER, I think criminal charges are inappropriate. If some depressed guy goes home and blows his brains out because his boss chewed him out something royally, pushing him over the edge, is the boss now liable for his death? Prosecutors have gotten in the habit of trying to play God and are beginning to use the law for something it was never intended for: getting even. The woman broke no laws by being an arse online. If typing vile, evil things online was a crime, more than half of the computer owners in the world would be on trial!
2. I’m not completely convinced the mother had anything to do with it. I suspect she’s been covering up for her ‘mean girl’ daughter. Then again, maybe it’s my wishful thinking. I don’t want to believe an adult–a MOTHER, no less–would stoop so low. Then again, I have seen parents treat other peoples’ crazy, so, who’s to say?

This is a crazy story regardless of color. For an adult to e-bully someone they KNOW to be a child to the point of suicide is ridiculous. This story is pretty old though. If I’m not mistaken it happened it my hometown. I’m just glad something is finally being done about it.
I think that the women should be held responsile because she knew that the girl was depressed and she took full advantage of that and than told the girl the world would be better off without you. that is like a trigger for a person who already has emotional problems. This child did not kill herself “over some internet crap”. She didn’t wake upany other day and kill herself. She kiled herself because a grown woman took the time and energy to harass and torment her online.

She “created” a teenage boy with the full intention to build this child up just to let her down. She attacked a child emotionally with tragic results. She should be punished.
And for the record, this child was tormented and harassed for months by her peers and she never killed herself before. She killed herself because an adult deceived and took advantage of an already bullied child’s desperation for friendship.
What is even sicker is that this woman did what pedophiles do all the time online. Pedophiles pose as children to gain the trust of children in order to hurst, abuse, or even kill chilren. This woman’s intentions are no different than a predetor pedophile.
Depressed or not, I can almost guarantee this child would still be alive today if this woman did not emotionally abuse her. The girl had already been tormented and was surviving. She thought she had made a new friend online and it turned out to be her tormentors.

I totally agree with your blog. I donot feel that the internet mom should be charged with a crime. The internet mom has to live with being ignorant and low for the rest of her life, but she doesn’t deserve any jail time. The mother of the suicide victim needs to claim responsibility in this because she knew what the internet had to offer and if she was already aware that her child had been diagnosed with depression she should have kept her away from the internet chat room. I heard the mother speak on a TV show months ago saying she allowed her child to chat with the so called teenage boy because it made her happy. So now look what happened. Im not trying to throw the race card in, but honestly minorities have been harrassed all of our lives, but no one has been charged with contributing to anything that happened afterwards………STOP IT!!!

I’m glad that woman got indicted but I don’t think she should get all 20years. On the same note the mother is not completely innocent for she is to take much of the blame also. She knew her daughter was under depression and on medication. As a parent why is your 13yr old on myspace. At 13 you can’t get an account unless you lie about your age. To get an adult account you have to be like 16 I think and 14 for a child account. The 13yr old should not have had a computer in her room and her mom should have had parental guidance settings on the computer which takes less than 5 minutes to set up. This prevents any type of child predators from reaching your child. If she had been on top of her parenting skills this may have been prevented who knows. Plus didn’t her mother know she had an online relationship with the 16yr “boy” Even if it wasn’t the lady it could have been a rapist trying to get her address. SMH parents these days.
I am very confused. From a legal standpoint, the prosecution will be facing an uphill battle in trying this case. They’re using the computer sexual predator statute to try this woman. Chances are, the defense will file a motion to dismiss, if the judge does’nt throw it out of court. It was wrong what this woman did, but there’s no way the prosecution will be able to prove that this girls’ suicide was directly linked to internet taunting. If y’all think about it rationally, the mere thought that anyone can be charged and then imprisioned for cyber-bullying which leads to suicide would set a dangerous legal precedent that can lead to compromising an already compromised Freedom of Speech - That plus the fact, the prosecution will also have to prove this girl didn’t already have a pre-existing mental illness…And if she did, her parents should be held liable for allowing her access to social chatroom sites without proper monitoring, and, or supervision. For the sake of common sense, I hope this case will be dismissed early - If not, this can lead to a slippery slope of knee-jerk (frivolous) lawsuits.

While I understand Marquis legal perspective, I think this is one precedent that needs to be set. This woman must be held accountable for her abuse against a child. Abuse she joked about because most subversive and passive abusers (ie. slanderers, internet bullies, malicious gossipers, stalkers, identity thieves) are confidence in their assaults being under the radar of the law. Their crimes have devastating outcomes but their crimes are written off with the cowardly and passive aggressive excuse that “they didn’t do anything “illegal”.
Set the precedent. An adult using the internet to lure, harass, defame, slander, libel, verbally abuse, threaten or to in any way cause harm or intentional distress to a minor, said adult should be fined and jailed.
If grown educated and employed women “fall in love” online and go as far as to quit their jobs uproot their kids and relocate for men they met online and know for only weeks, then a teenage girl is particularly vulnerable.
So imagine the vulnerability of a bullied and isolated teenaged girl desperate for a friend and flattered by attention from a “teenage boy”. And then to be “rejected” in such an unwarranted and cruel way, and it’s all a hoax by her bullies, was life-altering to this child.
I also don’t believe she was mentally ill or depressed. She was being tormented and it was easier for her parents to medicate her to cope than to value their child enough to move away.
