Iconic
Posted by Bossip Staff
Check out this sneak peek of Aaliyah gracing the cover of Fader Magazine for the annual icon issue. Seven years after her passing, friends remember the pop diva:
Missy Elliott
“We was gonna save the world. We was gonna change music every chance we got. We was gonna always be family. Forever.”Damon Dash
“She was already a fashion icon, she was getting into movies, she had already planted that seed. If she was alive today she would be so relevant. I see little bits of her everywhere I look, in a lot of artists.”
Check out the back and front covers of the upcoming addition below.
Thanks Will!

Miss Her!
Im first!!!
Love Aaliyah and you are truly missed.
Interesting…
truly a beautiful young woman…
Nice tribute, nice cover.
On another note, I love Missy but gosh…it’s “We were”…
So pretty, talented and classy. She was sexy without over doing it. She did not have to be half naked and grinding all over the place. A lot of female artists can learn from her. She is truly missed!!
BEAUTIFUL!
ah Aaliyah!!!
After 7 years of her being gone, I’m still in shock.
Miss You Baby Girl
co-sign @ Diva!
awwww..so nice..where can i get this magazine?
Bossip why is this filed under one-time?
@ JSABP
LOL
Good lord, they couldn’t use a photo of her with her eyes open?
Bet the beautiful Aaliyah looked like that in the casket. poor thing RIP ma
I still miss her too. I named my first baby girl after baby girl. RIP Aaliyah!
that’s kinda creepy… I understand the tribute- but have “new” photos pop up on a magazine cover years later is a bit off…
let me know, let me knowwwwwwwwww
what an angelic voice!!!!
she definitely made her mark.
that does not look like her!!
That looks like the chick from Girlfriends!
i always think she had sexy african lips!
i miss her
that does not look like her!!
That looks like the chick from Girlfriends!
I thought the same thing.
i see Ciara is commenting on her death..i wonder if she admits that if Aaliyah never lost her life, she’d have no career.
What i admired about her talent, was that she knew how to play to her vocal strengths. - In that way she never gave in to the vocal histrionics like Beyonce, Christina Aguillera and some of her other peers. She was by far on the more intelligent singers. R.I.P.
*She was by far one of the more intelligent singers*
I receieved those magazines at work a week ago. I have over twenty copies if anyone wants any. It was a nice piece on her. But am I the only one to notice that she looks different in that picture versus the other (more recent) photos?
Er body know that Aaliyah would be the hottest chic in the game if she were here on earth…she is amongst other angels…
beautiful picture…I still miss her…wow, seven whole years…i remember the day I found out, August 26, 2001. it was around 10am…
Seven years pass so quick.
Love YOU Aaliyah!
the realiest
So, so, beautiful. Nothing else to say.
she was beautiful!
Save Burma
Exactly marquis, i was about to sy so!
Every fuckin day in this bossip people are arguing about who sing better and BS like that!
But AAliyah is the proof that you don’t need to sing like a opera to be able to touch people!
There are people that are supposed to be the perfect voice like Celine dion for example and she don’t touch me at all! Aaliyah was sweet but her MUSICALITY was the best!
I think Dame Dash is still hurting. I would too, she was a great person.
*R.I.P.*
btw, these photos are definitely not “new”. I remember seeing the front cover photo within the same year she passed away.
And she was so respectful, never see a pic of her crotch even by accident lol!!
I never knew her perssonally and she really touched my life as though I did. She is missed dearly.
i liked her. i can’t think of any songstress today who has taken her spot
nobody was showing their crotches 7 years ago
this is a new trend
Beautiful, beautiful girl. She is missed so much!
God, i loved that girl. i miss her very much. the cover is a little too eery for me tho
SHE WAS SO BEAUTIFUL……………………
I like Aaliyah and all, may she rest in peace, but this was one of those cases where ‘people are more appreciated after they’ve died’.
No disrespect.
I don’t she was the greatest. Honestly, as much as I dislike Beyonce - she is the greatest. Her greatness surpassed Aaliyah’s and even if she still was alive I believe that would also be the case.
WHY DO PEOPLE CONSTANTLY BRING UP BEYONCé’S DAMN NAME EVERYTIME THERE IS A DISCUSSION ABOUT A FEMALE ARTIST? WTF?
I Miss Aaliyah Soooooooooooooo Much! Her music was great… I still rock all her songs in my ipod.
R.I.P. xoxoxo
I miss her terribly god had better plans for her R.I.P AALIYAH
@Bree
Beyonce is wack!! No comparison whatsoever!!
HELLO BROOKLYN!!
@ missing liyah
I remember when I found out too. 2am I popped in her CD and listened to it until I fell asleep. The next morning I woke up with my mother saying “some singer, Aaliyah, was killed in a plane crash.” I didn’t think she knew what she was talking about until I saw it on CNN. Complete shock.
Missy Elliot needs to get a book on Grammar. It is not “we was” it should be “we were”. She sounds so illiterate!!!
No only why was Beyonce bought up but Ciara as well? Why can’t people just focus on the positive for once and leave the BS in the other post.
@brooklyn
sup fam just got back from my graduation ceremony, i have another one tomorrow, how are u?
THAT IS MY GIRL RIGHT THERE!!!!!
NO COMPARISON TO ANYONE. SHE WAS THE TRUTH, TOTAL PACKAGE, LOOKS, TALENT and MAD STYLE!
GOOD JOB FADER FOR KEEP AALIYAH RELEVANT!!!!!!!!!
Brooklyn
i don’t think Beyoncé is wack, however the only comparison between her & Aaliyah are their professions and affiliations w/ the Roc
@ Soulwoman
i brought up Ciara because she is mentioned on the cover of the magazine
test
@ bree
I agree. As much as I love Beyonce. Why keep bringing her up?
Damn, can we remember Aaliyah without bringing up how great Beyonce is.
Aww Aaliyah was so stunning…
Damn I miss her…she was my ultimate favorite artist.
she’s so amazing.
we need her so much right now.
God bless her soul.
why do they have a dead person on a magazine cover as if she’s alive, the lady is gone man, let it go. I despise the idolizing of humans, its truly despicable.
@ Mena
Greatest in what respect? Aaliyah before her unfortunate death, also had a promising career in acting also. She had a pivotal role in the Matrix and a few other roles on the table…And as far as who was the better vocalist, that is not only subjective, but in some cases debabtable. Yes Beyonce has a more powerful range, but has (imho) a problem with enunciating some of her lyrics + she like some of her peers, tends to rely on too many runs (histrionics) and other vocal pyrotechnics…Where as Aaliyah was smart enough to just sing the song in the way that the classic vocalist of yesteryear suchas Dionne Warick does.
@ mena,
you re just a stan!
don’t pretend you don’t like beyonce and then claim she is the greatest!
She might be rich or doing it big but she is not the greatest singer, she is not the greates dancer, she is not the greatest writer so what do you mean! I understand that she have millions of fans but guess what there are 6 billions of folks in this plabet so just bring your BS to beyonce world!
thank you!
Im glad im not the only one that wouldve never known that was aaliyah had they not said it..yes she look just like jill marie scott right there..I dont like that pic cause it doesnt really show the real aaliyah but hard to believe she was even younger than me when she passed…gone far too soon…
Just gorgeous and beautiful pics….She is truly missed! Love her forever! I still listen to her music. I just got finished listening to that song she did with DMX. I’m sad now.
greatest*
billions*
planet*
Now, that’s my bitch. Since her there hasn’t been any woman like her that can pull off the hooded sexy look like her. Female singers have tried but they get caught up in the slutty look. She is a true classic. May she RIP.
Damn,
I swear something is wrong with Beyonce’s fans.
I love lots of different artists , i don’t need to call anybody the greatest or not, that just disturbing man! Just like they brainwashed or something!
Here we go wit Beyonce again…Obsessions i swear..When Beyonce was still Destinys Child, Aaliyah was singing and acting WELL, I might add. You never know who will be great. Sometimes it takes a death to pave the way for greatness in another person. Beyonce should be thankful…..
I miss Aaliyah so very much, and Lisa “Left Eye” Lopez as well. I loved their spirit.
http://www.jhazzaisworld.wordpress.com
Why would you bring up Beyonce in memory of another respectable artists death? Thats not necessary
Back to the subject. Aaliyah is a genious! But i feel sorry to imagine that she might have been abused by R Kelly!!! But she was looking fine so i guess it did not disturb her too much!!
I have tears in my eyes. R.I.P
there is only one aaliyah and knockoffs need to fall back.it still break my heart knowing this child is dead
R.I.P.
I am putting her songs on my ipod when I get home. She was such a respectable person who had integrity. Jay said it best when blew up her song I miss you.
@melanie

thanks buddie, some chic fainted when she collected her degree on stage!!! HILARIOUS
even though i didn’t know her personally her passing affected me so deeply…she reminded me alot of my late cousin…taken too soon as well…she was a beautiful girl and a wonderful performer and she will always be missed…iconic is truly what she has become…RIP babygirl…
RIP Alliyah! You are truly loved and missed by many…
(Respectfully speaking) True, there should be a time when comments should be geared directly towards the topic and I GUESS this would be the case concerning Alliyah - respect for the dead. But, truthfully, it doesn’t even matter who the topic is about, if people want to divert from it a little bit to state their OPINION, then darnit…so bit it! I don’t see how Mena’s comment was all that offensive. As far as who’s the greatest, that’s a personal opinion again. Yes numbers speak volumes, but people are still entitled to state what they do/don’t like.

@ Missy the problem is that numbers don’t mean shit today!
Soulja boy can be 1st when the roots are not even listed! Numbers does not equal talent at all!! It is all about OPINION but people are taking it like it should legitmate their opinion. And that prove they are brainwashed because to me one of the greatest is Erykah badu and i don’t even know how many albums she sells and guess what i don’t give a shit! If there is only one album, then it is going to be ME who bought it! So love who you want but don’t bring figures or pseudo facts when at the end of the day, it is still how you interprete those figures that matters! Not the figures itself! Celine Dion and Barbara streisand are every year on the Forbes list! Do I think they are the greatest! NO
@Diamond
I’ve tried to listen to Alliyah’s last album - and I can’t. It’s so hard to do because you have this dying need to want to hear more and you know you can’t. That’s torture! But I love “At Your Best”. That’s a jam amongst the many that she had. I think I can tolerate this song more because it makes me cry and gives me strength at the same time.
Woo, that’s deep!!!
@ dre(Check me out!)
@brooklyn
thanks buddie, some chic fainted when she collected her degree on stage!!! HILARIOUS

LMAO… Girls are funny!! They get so emotional, lol!!
@Diamond
Is that you Iz?
Love Alliyah, but there was something about that movie, Queen of the Dam, that I did not like seeing a beautiful Angel like Alliyah playing that crazy vampire. Acting or no Acting. I did not like that movie. And I read that Alliyah was afraid of flying.
@Valenne
I actually concur with everything you said. I have the feeling that we have the same interest in music just based off the few artists you mentioned: The Roots, Erykah B. I’m not into a lot of this music these days, I can’t even tell you the last time I bought an album. I’ve been playing ol’ skool music for over 3 years now…lol. But I feel you on the people who come on these gossip sites talking about how many albums such and such sold like that constitutes them the best thing since slice bread, but that’s still an opinion - a “brainwashed” opinion like you said. I was just saying that people are going to have a difference of opinions and are going to say something on the WEB that people aren’t going to agree with, but you have to respect what their opinions at the end of the day because it’s their opinion. But like you, I can preach knowledge or what not in hopes that they’ll get it. If they do…great! If not…keep it moving.
@BK
Glad you like, now let’s see what’s poppin later.
@Valenne
My bad, you didn’t mention The Roots as in the band, you were making a philosophical statement in terms of roots…LOL. But if you like E. Badu, I’m sure The Roots are not too far behind. Peace.

??????????? WHAT, ANYWAYS THANKS!!
I mean when you really like an artist, it is because you are really touched by him, you know, the message, the voice or whatever, but people don’t even say what they like about her! They just say what is “known” about her! But anyways, my last album was Erykah badu and a compile of Guru!! But i need some music now. I usually habg out on disc store to find the old school soul music cause i love it and you would be surprised to see how you recognize somme songs. I even listen to the original of the songs of Alicia call “if i was your woman”. I was like damn, i hope she did not say she wrote it! lol!! But i love Alicia too!
@ Dre
Congrats on the degree
I was talking about the BAND lol

LOL!! Dre, stop it, you killing me over here, LMPRAO!! Britney?? Son, you wildin’!!! But yeah, get your crunk on my dude… Well deserved!! Tru Story!
Why are people talking about Aaliyah like she was the best artist out there .. during her time she was cool. Her singing ability was definitely no better than mediocore but she had her own style and was setting trends and was a very pretty girl. You are instantly granted sainthood when you die young. She is only iconic because shes dead. Her portfolio doesnt suggest otherwise. When she was alive, critics constantly critized her on her lack of vocal skills and I remember going to a concert of hers where she was almost booed because her singing was so soft, low it was almost nonexistant, and she wasnt even the headliner. It would be like calling Ashanti a legend should she suddenly die.
@Anonymous
SYBIL??????? ARE U CALLING ME A PROPHETESS!!!!!
@Mena
I like Aaliyah and all, may she rest in peace, but this was one of those cases where ‘people are more appreciated after they’ve died’.
No disrespect.

Celine Dion and Barbara streisand are every year on the Forbes list! Do I think they are the greatest! NO
&^^ dont matter tho … they still getting that gaup! they caked up in a ridiculous manner
Does Missy Eliott have a GED? You would think with all of that money should would at least learn the english language
We was - how about we were
@ Pretty brown girl
Yes they getting that paper but i don’t hear nobody saying they the hottest just because of that! And trust Celine Dion is probably BILLIONNAIRE NOW!!
First off, I am NOT a Stan. And I can say that Beyonce is on top of her game and still hate her (believe me I can’t stand the attention craving whore). I love a lot of artists’ music and do not particularly care for them beyond that. Aaliyah was a good artist. I loved her whole aura more-so than anything else. I agree, she was different then most of the female musicians you see today — BUT I don’t think that her music could define her as the best.. or whatever.
Like I said, and it isn’t as if I cam in here bashing, I think she’s one of those cases in which people appreciate you more when you’ve passed on.
And whoever thinks that I am a stan is a closed minded bias individual.
And Celine Dion is said to be one of the best voices alive! She uses her voice like an instrument! That does not mean i am supposed to like when she sings! It is all about OPINION!
Celine Dion looks like a freakin’ Alien!! E.T. phone home!!
I’m writting him a 4 paged letter…and I enclosed it with a kiss! And when I write him, he’d better get it on time!!!
–Will always be remembered.
AIGHT FAM AKA BROOKLYN, MELANIE MDADDY..IM OUT YA’LL PEACE AND LOVE

I know right but apparently Millions of people don’t car of her looks and to be honest I think it is a good thing! We black folks are boycotting Fantasia because she is not all that!!! If she was prettier, with that kind of voice she will be far from where she is now!!
Felt like I grew up with her in a way… Very sad day when it was announced that she had passed, she seemed to be such a beautiful person…
R.I.P. Baby Girl, you are truly missed in the game…ICON Indeed!
for some reason i thought aaliyah was the best. even after beyonce came out and there was destiny’s child i always remained to think that aaliyah was my girl. she was honestly my favorite artist cause she was one woman that always remained the same. she never changed her image for the game and i just respected her so much for that. she was a tomboy and remained that. even when she tried the girly thing she always went back to the baggy leather pants and shades. Aaliyah was the greatest cause she didn’t make this industry change her. beyonce did, ciara did, mariah did, all those girls just sold their souls.
Oh and for the Haters: Vocals don’t always make you a celebrity…..Aaliyah had elegance & a swagger outta this world, that even Aretha Frankilin or Whitney couldn’t touch!!!! It’s not all about the vocals sweetie!! Quit hating.
I love Aaliyah so much, even got a D tat right where she has her A. I admired the woman because she was amazing at everything she did, nobody could touch her..to think it’s been seven years hurts and makes me want to cry. She made us all feel like we knew her and that’s something these artists just can’t do now.Half of them are not as original as Aaliyah was and never will be. Stay up. God bless.
